Frequently Asked Questions

As you can imagine, our clients have a lot of questions when it comes to renovating their kitchen. Here are some of the top questions we get asked:

Get Started

If you haven’t already done so, get some inspiration from photos, magazines and the internet. Second, make a list about the things you need and want in a kitchen.

It is important to keep in mind that the perfect kitchen for you is based on your family’s needs and how you work in the kitchen. Your IKIT kitchen designer will ensure that good kitchen design principles are factored in.

Call or email IKIT for your free consultation where we will measure your kitchen and talk about your needs and wants. We will take the overall room measurements and the dimensions of any appliances that you’re keeping, or if you are planning to buy new appliances we can get the measurements from the store or let us show you the full range of IKEA® appliances.

IKIT’s designers knows how important it is that your kitchen is functional and is customized to how you work. We will prioritize a good design that helps make your cooking and cleanup easier. This could include things like:

  • Ensuring a clear path and practical distances between sink, stove and fridge.
  • Ensuring appliances, large and small, are positioned effectively.
  • Ensuring there aren’t any places where doors or walls interfere with each other.
  • Ensuring that as many people as possible can use the kitchen at the same time without getting in each other’s way.

Once your kitchen has a good skeleton, sometimes also known as a kitchen triangle, then it’s time to have fun choosing colours and finishes.

What is the kitchen work triangle?

When considering a new layout for your kitchen, we look at the kitchen work triangle. This area is formed by the space between the kitchen sink, the refrigerator and the stove. The idea is that these kitchen items need to be convenient to each other and have counter space next to them for necessary food preparation and cleaning. When they are placed separately forming a triangle, it allows for a good traffic pattern and adequate work areas.

Budgeting

No two kitchen remodels are the same.  This makes answering any question about cost very difficult. IKIT’s focus has always been on service to our clients no matter their budget.

Planning is key, so before you begin your kitchen re-model, you want to know exactly what you expect to spend. This can be achieved this by choosing materials like flooring, countertops, and cabinetry in advance. Once we have designed your new kitchen, it should be easy to calculate the cost of materials and labour.  Ideally, you want to minimize changes to your re-model plans to avoid extra costs. Working with an IKIT professional kitchen designer can help you make the best choices for your kitchen, budget, and lifestyle.

Design

Definitely. That’s what we are there to help you with. Also, IKEA® has a massive selection of styles and colours, and organizing and space saving accessories, to choose from.

Classic kitchens never go out of style.  It also helps to stick with white or off-white when it comes to colours.

No.  Depending on your taste, your new IKEA® kitchen can be designed with contrasting cabinets. Unique looks can be achieved by contrasting the kitchen island cabinets from the wall mounted upper and lower cabinets.  Contrasting countertops is another design tool used to customize kitchens and create unique looks.

Installation

The great thing about IKEA® kitchen products is any style or color you choose is warehoused on the mainland at one of their locations in Richmond or Coquitlam. There is no wait time for any of the IKEA® products and essentially your kitchen re-model could be started the next day!

Generally, the old kitchen cabinets and appliances need to be removed. If your kitchen layout is changing then plumbers or electricians may be involved, as well as general contractors who will patch the walls and take care of flooring and tiling before the cabinets can be installed.

There is no normal and every project is different, so you’ll need to talk to your IKIT designer to get the full details.

If your kitchen floor was installed after your existing cabinets, there will be no flooring under the cabinets. If you have more of the flooring, it can always be used with your new kitchen cabinets to repair or reconfigure the cabinet footprint. If you don’t have more of the existing flooring or can’t get any, it will be necessary to duplicate the existing kitchen cabinet layout or replace the flooring.

Warranty and Replacement Parts

  • IKEA® cabinets offers 25 years warranty
  • IKEA® appliances offers 5 years warranty
  • IKEA® faucets offers 10 years warranty

We are happy to help, you can call us at (250) 331-0915 or e-mail us directly at simone@ikit.com and we can pick up your replacements parts and install them for you.  You can also order them yourself through IKEA®.

IKIT does not reface existing cabinetry, and we feel the best overall value is to replace and re-model your kitchen, as it is a better use of your budget in the long-term and you get to fix the functional issues of the space. Even if you can’t change the footprint of your space, our designers can accomplish phenomenal transformations, both aesthetically and functionally.

IKIT is not a general contractor and we are great at kitchens, so we stick to kitchens.  We are primarily a design and installation firm and leave the general contracting to general contractors.
